Hiring a handyman in NYC: 8 checks before you say yes
A quick checklist to avoid surprises: license, insurance, contract, payment and more.
- Check the license. Jobs over $200 need a NYC Home Improvement Contractor license. How to check.
- Ask about insurance. Ask for proof of general liability insurance, and workers' compensation if they have employees. Many co-ops and condos require a certificate of insurance before work starts.
- Read reviews. Look for reviews that describe similar jobs, and how the pro handled problems.
- Get 2–3 quotes. Very low quotes can mean shortcuts. Compare what's included, not just the price.
- Get it in writing. A written contract should list the work, materials, price, start and finish dates, and the contractor's license number.
- Don't pay everything up front. Pay a reasonable deposit and the rest as work is completed. Avoid cash-only arrangements for big jobs.
- Check building rules. Your building may limit work hours or need an alteration agreement. Some work needs a DOB permit.
- Know your rights. For home improvement contracts, New York consumers generally get a 3-day right to cancel. Keep copies of everything.
