About NYCHandymen

NYCHandymen helps New Yorkers find a handyman they can trust. Every business we list holds an active NYC Home Improvement Contractor license, using the City's own license records, and every review comes from a neighbor who hired them.

How we're different

  • Licensed only. We only list businesses with an active NYC home improvement license, and we refresh our data regularly.
  • No bidding wars. You contact the pro directly. Your request is never auctioned off to a crowd of contractors.
  • Honest reviews. We never write, buy or edit reviews, and we don't hide honest negative ones.

How we rank

Pros are ranked only by reviews from verified customers who actually hired them. A pro with many strong reviews ranks above one with a single review, and pros with no reviews yet are shown by distance from you.

No business can pay to rank higher. Some businesses advertise with us and get a "Partner" badge, a website link and photos on their listing. The Partner badge never changes where they appear in results.

Every review is checked before it's published. We may ask the reviewer to confirm they hired the business, for example with a photo of an invoice or receipt.

How grades work

Each pro with reviews gets a letter grade based on the average of their customer ratings. A is the best and F is the worst.

GradeAverage rating
A4.5 to 5.0 stars
B3.5 to 4.4 stars
C2.5 to 3.4 stars
D1.5 to 2.4 stars
FBelow 1.5 stars

A grade reflects the opinions of reviewers, not a finding by us or the city. Pros with no reviews don't have a grade yet, and paying us can't change a grade.

How we make money

The site is free for homeowners. We earn money from Partner businesses, from advertisers, and from ads shown on the site. Partners and ads are always labeled, and money never affects ranking or reviews.

About the data

License details come from the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection via NYC Open Data. We guess trades from business names until owners claim their listing, so details may be incomplete. Spot a mistake? Tell us.
