Handyman or contractor: who do you need in NYC?
A simple way to decide who to call, based on the size of the job and the trades involved.
The right person depends on how big the job is and whether it touches wiring, pipes or the structure of the building.
A handyman usually fits when
- The job is small and takes hours rather than weeks.
- It's a list of little repairs, like patching, caulking, mounting and assembly.
- No permits or building filings are needed.
A general contractor usually fits when
- You're renovating a kitchen or bathroom, or several trades must work together.
- Walls are being moved or the layout is changing.
- The project needs permits, drawings or an alteration agreement.
Call a licensed specialist when
- Electrical: new circuits, panels or wiring.
- Plumbing or gas: anything beyond very minor fixture work.
- Heating and cooling: boilers, central AC and refrigerant work.
Whoever you hire, remember that home improvement jobs over $200 need a NYC license. See when a license is required.
